The Importance of Effective Waste Management
Effective waste management is essential for Thailand's circular economy, says Insee Ecocycle. The company promotes plastic recycling and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production for energy and cement industries. However, poor waste sorting increases costs and hampers recycling. By tackling these issues, Thailand can turn waste into a valuable resource and enhance its sustainable economy.
Suchintana Viraratt, CEO of Insee Ecocycle, highlighted the range of solutions available for efficient waste management, including recycling plastics and creating refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to support electricity generation and cement production.
She noted that improper waste sorting remains a significant challenge, particularly with community waste, as it leads to higher waste management costs.
Properly sorted community waste has the potential to be recycled, she explained, adding that approximately 80% of community waste consists of plastic, making it highly suitable for RDF production.
Suchintana emphasized the interconnected nature of waste management and the circular economy, noting that waste handling is an integral part of the value chain. She anticipates that Insee Ecocycle will process and reduce 300,000 tons of industrial and community waste this year.
The company is also exploring new methods to enhance waste management efficiency, particularly by increasing RDF production to support energy and cement industries.
At Insee Ecocycle, we regard waste as a valuable resource that should be managed from the outset of the production cycle to maximize its benefits, she added.
According to the Pollution Control Department, Thailand generated 25.70 million tons of waste last year. Out of this, 8.80 million tons were utilized, 9.80 million tons were properly treated, and 7.10 million tons remained unmanaged.
